I am delighted to be a part of the Hawthorne High School family! I have been an educator at Hawthorne High School since 2007. Currently I am the Coordinator and Counselor for the International Baccalaureate and English Language Development program, however I have also been a teacher in the History department and Criminal Justice Academy as well as Dean of Students. I have over 15 years of experience in the education profession. In 1997, I earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. I majored in Behavioral Science and minored in Criminal Justice and Corrections. I also earned a History/Social Science Teaching Credential at Cal Poly. In 2006, I earned a Masters of Arts from Point Loma of Nazarene University. My graduate studies' emphasis was education with a concentration in school counseling, in addition I attained a Pupil Personnel Services Credential. In 2011, I completed all requirements to receive an Administrative Services Credential Certificate of Eligibility. I value my education and hold a deep commitment towards educating our youth.

I bring a variety of personal experiences that, I believe, allow me to be a better educator and mentor to students. First is my family upbringing and heritage. My parents are both Mexican and immigrants to this country and came here in search of better opportunities. They have worked very hard in this country and have instilled the same work ethic in their children. I speak Spanish fluently and have traveled extensively throughout Mexico. I am very proud of my heritage and defines much of who I am. I have also enjoyed visiting Peru, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Canada. All these countries have wonderful cultures and have provided me with an understanding of the similarities that we all share and the challenges that exist in other part of the world as well as a deep appreciation for their cultures and their differences. I also love the outdoors! I use the outdoors to maintain a healthy physical and mental disposition. In 2011, I joined the HHS Students Run LA (SRLA) team and trained to run the LA Marathon. I am a proud 2012 Los Angeles Marathon finisher! I also enjoy hiking and backpacking. I have backpacked to several peaks in the Sierra Mountains and had an amazing time hiking the Inca Trail in Peru. I am a better educator because of these experiences.

I am excited to begin another school year at HHS and look forward to collaborating with my colleagues, parents, and students to continue to improve Hawthorne High School!  HHS students are awesome!
