CAREER CENTER BULLETIN
OPEN HOURS: 7:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. Week of September 14th – September 18th
SAT 1/11 and ACT TEST: The SAT 1/11 registration deadline for the October 10th test is extended to September 23rd for students who are waiting for a fee waiver. The ACT deadline for the October test is September 18, 2009. You must take the plus writing on the ACT test. Fee Waivers for SAT 1/11 tests and for the ACT test are available in the College/Career Center during lunch.
FALL SO CAL ROC (SCROC): Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores interested attending SCROC fall semester should pick up an application in the College/Career Center. Fall SCROC starts Tuesday, September 8, 2009. You must be there the first day or you will be dropped from class. It is important to register early to get the class of your choice. For more information, see Mrs. Walker in the College/Career Center. All applications must be signed by your parent and your counselor.
WORK PERMITS: Any person under the age of 18 must have a work permit in order to work even during the summer. You need to be hired by your employer first, before picking up an application. Work Permits are issued in the College/Career Center. Regular and Summer Work Permits expire on September 17th of each school year and need to be renewed. Having a work permit is a privilege. While school is in session, you must by law have a 2.0 G.P.A.
UC SANTA BARBARA SPEAKER: A speaker from UC Santa Barbara will be here on Tuesday, September 15th. You must pick up a pass before the day of the event in the College/Career Center in order to attend.
STANFORD UNIVERSITY SPEAKER: A representative from Stanford University is eager to explain how you can afford to attend this university. He has only heard great things about you cougars and is willing to explain how you can become part of the Stanford family. This speaker will be here on Tuesday, September 22nd. You must pick up a pass before the day of the event in the College/Career Center in order to attend.
CSU DOMINGUEZ HILLS REPRESENTATIVE: The CSU Dominguez Hills Representative will be here on September 24th from 9am – 11am to talk to you about attending a university. See Mrs. Walker for an appointment time if you have any questions about the CSU system.
MOUNT ST. MARY’S COLLEGE: A speaker from Mount St. Mary’s College will be her on September 28th. Come hear what this college has to offer. This college is for females. Male students can attend if they major in Music or Nursing. Male nurses are in great demand and are actually paid more. Come to the College/Career Center and pick up a pass so you can learn more about this College. You must pick up a pass before the day of the event in order to attend.
MILITARY REPRESENTATIVES: A representative from the Air Force, Army, Marine and the Navy come on campus on Wednesdays during lunch to answer any questions one might have. Each military branch comes on campus once every month on a Wednesday. Feel free to say hello. See Mrs. Walker for questions.
NAVY REPRESENTIVE: The Navy representative will be here Wednesday, September 16th during lunch time to talk to any student who may be interested.
COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT: All students are invited to College Information Night, Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30 P.M. in the Student Cafeteria. A panel of college admission officers and members of Hawthorne High Counseling staff will be making presentations on:
• College and University Requirements
• Application procedures and deadlines
• Costs and Financial Aid Scholarships
• Housing
• Testing Requirements and Opportunities
Seniors will learn about application procedures, financial aid and housing. Younger students need this information for college planning. A question/answer time will follow the presentations. (This is not a College Fair. This is a speaker program with our guests speaking from 6:30 to 7:45 with time for questions and answers.)
SELECTIVE SERVICE: There has not been a draft in this country since 1973. However, it is the law that males turning 18 years of age register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their birthday. Register at any Post Office or on-line at: www.sss.gov. There are penalties for not registering.
