A Message from Hawthorne High's Principal

July 2023
Dear Hawthorne Family,

Welcome to Hawthorne High School for the 2023-2024 school year! It is a true honor to be serving you as the Principal of Hawthorne High School. I am deeply committed to the mission and vision of Hawthorne High School where we provide a safe and rigorous learning environment so that every student will graduate academically competitive, self-reliant, and prepared for college and careers. As an instructional leader, I am excited to have the opportunity to lead Hawthorne in its legacy of success by building strong relationships with students, staff, and the community. We remain committed to the same goal of providing you with the best educational opportunities and supports on campus.

Congratulations to each and every one of our students for their hard work, dedication, and commitment in demonstrating strong academics, regular attendance, and positive behaviors. Thank you for exemplifying Hawthorne’s character pillars L.E.A.P.S.: Leadership, Empathy, Achievement, Preparation, and Safety every single day. I am so proud to be part of the Cougar family, and I look forward to a successful 23-24 school year!

The main change for the upcoming school year is that the school day is now from 8:30am-3:21pm every day with six class periods. There are 11 late start Mondays throughout the school year (the 23-24 Bell Schedule can be viewed on the school website). The first day of school is Monday, August 14th at 8:30am. The Hawthorne staff - including our teachers, office staff, safety officers, maintenance & operations, and food services personnel - are looking forward to welcoming the entire student body back on campus. Another key change for the 23-24 school year is that the last phase of construction on our Athletics fields will start in September of this school year.

All students are expected to arrive at school on-time and ready to learn with charged Chromebooks. Please reach out to our IT department at [email protected] if you are experiencing any tech issues. In addition to demonstrating strong academics, regular attendance, and positive behaviors, all students are also expected to respect one another, help create a positive learning environment, and demonstrate good digital citizenship by using social media responsibly. Make sure to also take advantage of all the supports offered at HHS - Tutoring, Media Center, Wellness Center, and the College and Career Center - and get involved with various extracurricular activities and athletics.

STUDENTS - Join us for Grade Level Registration so that you can learn about how to get involved with Activities and Athletics, take your ID photos (required for school entry!), and receive your tentative class schedules. Parents/Guardians for 10th-12th grade students must update PowerSchool information prior to the grade level registration dates below. Directions can be found on our school website www.hhscougars.org under the “Parent” tab. Parents/Guardians are not required to be in attendance as long as they have updated PowerSchool. The entire registration should take no longer than 1 hour if PowerSchool has already been updated at home.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS - For 10th-12th grade students, update your PowerSchool information prior to the grade level registration dates above at https://powerschool.centinela.k12.ca.us/public. Directions can be found on our school website www.hhscougars.org under the “Parent” tab and clicking on “2023-24 PowerSchool Portal Instructions.” I also invite you to campus for Grade Level Parent Meetings so that you can meet the Administrative Team and learn about the many resources and supports we have on campus for your child, including Tutoring, Activities, Athletics, Wellness Center, Media Center, College and Career Center, and the Parent Center. I am looking forward to sharing the wonderful things we have in place to support student learning.

Your partnership and support are key elements to ensuring that we are able to maximize your child’s educational and personal development. To that end, we encourage a positive home-school relationship based on a mutual goal of providing the best learning experience. Thank you for entrusting your child’s education to Hawthorne High School. We will do everything we can to make sure our students are ready for college, career, and life. My doors are always open and I welcome your input, and I look forward to meeting you soon! I will continue to share updates via phone, email, and the school website. As always, please feel free to reach out to me should you have any questions or concerns. GO COUGARS!

With gratitude,
Ms. Grace Yang
