"Reform movements in the United States sought to expand democratic ideals."  Assess the validity of this statement with specific reference to the period 1820-1860.

Thesis: Although many of the reform movements of the antebellum period sought, in part, to expand the democratic ideals and spirit of egalitarianism permeating early 19th century American society, many of the movements were spurred on by entirely different motives.  Reform efforts such as temperance, prison and asylum reform and the movement to create common schools and provide for public education were motivated by changes in society as a result of technology, changing patterns in the American family and an influx of Irish and German immigrants.

Thursday 11/18 & Thanksgiving Break Assignments

Confused?!?!?!-- First, don't worry if Chapters 11-12 still seem like a lump of mess in your head or if the DBQ is still a mystery.  When I return on Monday 11/29, I will make sense of all of that for you!  I'm a trained professional! :)

Your job is simply keep doing what Mr. Anderson assigns.  If you do all of that, we'll be fine.

Grades?!?--- Secondly, I apologize for not having individual progress reports printed up for you before we leave for the break.  If I can figure out how to post them online without your names listed on them during the break, I will so that you can begin to check them.  If not: your grades in PowerSchool are accurate and you can check them and the individual assignments.  There are a few items not yet recorded: mostly your stamped homework from Unit 2 and your Unit 2 Essay Exam (all of which I will probably-- pending if I can get moved, write my 2 papers for my graduate school classes, get some sleep... in the next week!-- get done over the break and posted).  I will provide you with more detail on your grade and explain how you can make sure my accounting of your progress is correct and help you make a plan for our last two months of the First Semester (yikes!) when we get back!

Assignments--- I thought I would be able to be there on Thursday 11/18 to conduct class, but I won't be able to stay.  Because of this, I rearranged what it is I want you to do.  For now, leave the Documents you received about the War of 1812 until next week during the break.  But here's what I want you to do today with Mr. Allen and Amy's help.

a) Review with each other and Amy what you learned (didn't learn?) about the Document-Based Question (DBQ) on the AP Exam from looking at the Jefferson DBQ in the back of Bailey and the handout I gave you.  Just talk about it for a few minutes.  Amy-- who took the exam, wrote a DBQ on Puritans (!) and got a 4 (!!!)--- will discuss with you.

b) Look at the DBQ that appeared on the AP Exam several years ago on Jefferson.  Talk with Amy and Mr. Allen about what exactly the question is asking.

c) In groups of 3-5: read each document and discuss how each would help you answer the question.  Note: You might have to peek into Chapter 12 to understand some of the later Documents!  TRY YOUR BEST!

d) This is your assignment for today: I only need one paper per group, but I need each group to write each group members' name on the paper and turn it in to Mr. Allen when the period is over today-- explain in writing (a paragraph for each) how each document in the DBQ would help answer the question.

THANKSGIVING BREAK ASSIGNMENTS
1. Looking Again at the DBQ- What you did for the one Document on the War of 1812 and Thursday in class for the Jefferson DBQ (paragraph for each document), I want you to do for all the Documents for the War of 1812 DBQ.  This is a tough assignment that will require you to use a dictionary and talk to others about what the Documents are saying.  You think Bailey is tough to read?  These are harder!  Work together as long as each student completes an assignment.  The documents are posted below.

2. Take Home RQ 12- Just like for Chapter 11, you will have 2 RQ's for this Chapter.  One that will be a different format (Take Home!  No, for reals!) and one using the regular format.  The Take Home RQ is challenging.  But you have a week and unlimited resources to complete it.  You will be given a Scantron in class Thursday.  Answer the questions on the Take Home RQ and bring the Scantron to class Monday 11/29!  You may work together on this RQ, but I will be checking when you get back to make sure you understand your answers.  If it is clear during this check that you simply copied a classmates' Scantron, you will receive a zero on your quiz.

The Take Home RQ12 is posted as a .pdf file below.  I may or may not have copies for you in class Thursday.

You will also have a regular RQ12 Thursday 12/2.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!!!

Answers (with some commentary) for RQ 8
*if you're still unsure of WHY the answers are what they are, please ASK! Sorry we didn't get class time to go over this RQ and argue your answers!

1. e
Here, it's most important that you know why a is NOT the answer!

2. a
They actually had, but most important is that you know the other choices are all TRUE!

3. d
The new United States was especially sensitive to how foreign nations might view their rebellion against Great Britain. Would Spain see the rebellion as an example to its long-oppressed colonies? Would nations like Spain or Russia or France help Great Britain put down the rebellion? The U.S. needed foreign support (just ask the French! Oui! Oui!) and they needed other "mother" countries to know that this rebellion was not an indictment of ALL colonial powers, rather just that colonial power-- Great Britain-- who had abused them. The Declaration of Independence was a way of saying "Hey, look-- they abused us! This is about us and them, not you and your colonies!" (Although, the Spanish and Russians were FAR worse to their colonies than Great Britain and the French monarch was far more abusive to the French people than King George III was to the colonists!)

4. d
I'm going to give you a reading on this one in class Monday. (Aren't you lucky?) Self-determination=the right to determine for oneself what government one will have. Republicanism=a type of government (NOT democracy) in which people elect representatives or leaders who make educated decisions for them on their behalf (rather than having an appointed King doing it by himself!).

5. a
According to John Adams, only about 1/3 of the colonists supported independence in 1775. More were convinced by Common Sense, but even in the middle of the Revolution, many colonists stayed loyal to Great Britain.

6. d
Come on.... this was still on the board when you took the quiz!!!!

7. d

8. d
Which they ended up doing later!

9. e
It blamed it specifically on King George III. Do you remember why? (We discussed it in class!)

10. a
They're already in order!

11. c
Think: The Olive Branch Petition

12. a
How can you be just defending yourself if you attack another nation? Colonists wanted that land (remember how upset they were over the Quebec Act? No? Well, then go re-read that part!). This will NOT be the last time they lust for Canadian land and attack Canada. (How can you attack Canada? Canadians are so friendly!)

13. d
We talked about this MINUTES before you took your quiz!!!

14. e
BUT.... I did say b on the practice quiz. I'm not sure why. That isn't the answer. :( But that makes this one correct too even though it's incorrect. I already passed back your Scantrons so I'm just giving EVERYONE a free question. That means even if you got it right you get a free question and even if you chose something dumb like c (please say you didn't!), you get one! No need to thank me. :)

15. b
They had a REPUBLIC, not a DEMOCRACY. Democracy = bad during this time period. Democracy = Nathaniel Bacon & Daniel Shays!!!
