Extra credit chapter assessment answers

For those of you who want the end-of-chapter "assessment" question answers to chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5:

(Remember: the "chsm" files are much smaller than the "chte" files, if file size matters to you. Sorry there's no chte1ra.pdf. I can't seem to find it.)

Q2 Benchmark Quiz Show Questions

Ready for the semester final? Try this monster list of questions in Quiz Show a few times to see if you really are. It covers chapters 4 through 12, just like the Q2 Benchmark Exam will on 1/30/08 (odd periods) or 1/31/08 (even periods). This is a big file, so the download may take a while.

Chemical Equations Balancing Practice Worksheet

I really should have done the cardboard disc activity before giving this out, but I was sick and didn't want to run around the room, so I did this one early. We only went over the front side on the day we handed it out. We're going to finish it sometime during the week following its distribution.

Vaction is Over Quiz Show Day in 15-6A

WARNING: The chapter 10 cumulative tst file is a big one. It contains all the questions from chapters 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10 mixed together.

NOTE: I have added some question files since the day occurred, notably chapters 11 & 12.

Quiz show giving you problems? Scroll down a bit and try downloading the rtf versions of the question lists. They don't work in Quiz Show, but you can print them out from Word or even just an ordinary browser, I think, and practice with the questions on paper.

Due:

RTF versions of Quiz Show Questions:

The following files can be downloaded and printed out even if you're having trouble with Quiz Show, or even if you don't have Quiz Show at all. They have answer keys at the end so you can check to see how you did.

Mole Math Practice Quiz

Student conscripts and I showed everyone how to do these on the board in class, but if you didn't see it, there's an answer key on page three of this file. However, the scientific notation is given in a weird format. If it says "2.41e+022 atoms", for instance, that means 2.41 x 10^22 atoms (2.41 times 10 to the 22nd power). "1.16e–015 mol" would mean 1.16 x 10^-15 moles (1.16 times ten to the negative 15th power).

As always, you may only view these pdf files if you have a copy of the textbook in your possession. You may not print out or distribute these files. You must erase them from your hard drive as soon as you turn in your textbook at the end of the year.

Due:

Unit Conversion Practice Worksheet

The Power Point (ppt) file shows you how to solve (at least some of) the problems on the worksheet. Every time you click your mouse, one more step in the work shows up on the screen until the problem is done. The ppt is a work in progress, so I may be re-posting the file quite a few times as I add more and more to it. You might want to check back here every so often to see if I've added stuff. Too bad I can't add my voice . . . yet.

Chapter 9 Packet due

*Chapter 9 bookwork
*Current Science extra credit (11/19)
*Lewis Structures Quiz PRACTICE VERSION (2 sheets)
*Science World extra credit (11/26)

This is a small packet for many reasons. We didn't have time to really talk much about chapter 9 in class. Also, this chapter isn't really demanded by the standards, per se. There is no standard that says "students will be able to name a chemical based on its formula and know the formula of a chemical if given its name." The state framework booklet does mention that students should learn the rules for naming chemicals in order to know how to describe chemical reactions with chemical equations, however, so it's a good idea to learn this chapter, even though we're not taking a test on it.

Chapter 9 Assessment answers

Please do not print out, copy, store long-term, or distribute the pdf files downloadable below. They are taken directly from the teacher's edition CD-ROM, and, therefore, are protected by copyright, etc.. I figure you can look at them and have them on your computer as long as you have a copy of the textbook at home. Once you return your textbook at the end of the year, though, you must erase these files from your hard drive, just to be e-safe and e-ethical.

Chapter 8 Quiz Show

If you haven't already found out, let me break the good news to you: Quiz Show can be downloaded for free from the link below. It's a 7 MB download, and you can't do multiplayer, but, still, it's pretty great that it's available for free. You can play Quiz Show (Lite) from home now! Yay!

WARNING: The chapter 8 "cumulative" tst file includes all the questions from chapters 4, 6, 7, AND 8, so it's a big file (2 MB!). Use that one if you want to practice a combination of questions from all those chapters at once. If you want a shorter download, only use the chapter 8 "only" tst file.

Thank you, Jonathan Avila, for spotting the error in the hydrogen sulfide lewis structure question. The question has been fixed. Your vigilance benefits everyone.

Chapter 7.3 & 8.1 Section Assessment Answers

Barnes was sick, recovering from a sore throat, so, rather than go over these section assessment questions orally, he just made power points of the answers and projected them. Boring and non-interactive, but at least the info was transmitted. Yay for fun!

Thank you DeAndre Hinton and Precious Edwards-Jackson for helping point out typos.

Chapter 7 "Assessment" Question Answers

NOTE: The following files are straight out of the teacher's edition CD. You may view them, but do not copy, print out, or distribute them.

The file "chsm7.pdf" is nice and small, but it doesn't have standardized test prep answers.
The file "chte7ra.pdf" is much bigger (longer download), but it's a straight image of the teacher's edition pages in the back of the chapter, in full color, and it does include standardized test prep.

Chapter 6 Assessment Answers

Do not print out, copy, or distribute the following files. They are taken right out of the teacher's edition CD.

The file "chsm6.pdf" is smaller, but it has no standardized test prep answers and has no color.
The file "chte6ra.pdf" is much bigger (longer download), but it's in full color and does have standardized test prep answers.

Safety Contract Quiz

This was an open notes, open neighbor "quiz", but as we went over the answers in class students were expected to correct and complete all their answers, turning their quizzes into 100% correct quizzes. To do dangerous labs in this class, you have to turn in a signed Student Safety Contract AND a 100% correct Safety Contract Quiz.

Due:

Assignment

Periodic Treds Presentation

As with all presentations Mr. Barnes posts here, you can download and view this Power Point file online, but without Mr. Barnes to talk about it, it might not teach you nearly as much. You really should come to class, pay attention, and take good notes. Then, looking at this presentation online becomes much more meaningful and useful.

Due:

Assignment

Student Safety Contract due

You need to read this. Then, you need to fill it out with a blue or black ballpoint pen. This is a legal contract, so you can't use pencil or any funy ink colors. You also can't cross out things, white things out, erase things, et cetera. Any changes you make to it that look like changes will disqualify it as a legal contract and, therefore, Mr. Barnes will make you do it all over again. When you come to the three questions, answer them by checking the correct boxes. If you are allergic to something, tell me what you're allergic to.

One of your parents needs to read the contract, sign it, and date his/her own signature. You can't date their signature for them. Make sure your parents follow the same rules as you did.

Due:

Assignment

6.1 bookwork due

I know your homework list says 6.1 is due 9/20, but I've changed my mind. We needed more time to do chapter 4 justice.

Due:

Assignment

Atom Drawing Worksheet

Once you've paid close attention to Mr. Barnes' Atomic Structure presentation, you should be able to do this worksheet. Even though the skills in it were taught during chapter 4, Mr. Barnes will have you put it in the chapter 6 packet instead of the chapter 4 packet due to scheduling complications.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 4 Packet due

You will turn in the following things, stapled together in order, a couple of minutes before you take the chapter 4 multiple choice test:

Chapter 4 bookwork
Brainpop: Scientific Method notes (9/5/2007)
Scientific Method presentation notes (9/5/2007)
Atomic Structure presentation notes (9/20/2007)

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 4 Multiple Choice Quiz

This quiz has 14 multiple choice questions based on the standards addressed by chapter 4.
As with all quizzes, if you don't like your score, you can re-take it after school as often as once a day if necessary until you get a score you're happy with. Mr. Barnes can give you a list of practice questions if you need help preparing for it.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 4 "Assessment" answers

Do not copy, print out, or distribute the following files. They are taken straight from the teacher's edition CD.

Due:

Assignment

Static Electricity Lab due

This lab uses such simple materials that you can probably do it at home if you were absent the day we did it in class.
I moved the due date up a little so that only the chapter 4 packet would be due Monday. I don't like to have two assignments due on the same day. It gives me the heebie jeebies.

Due:

Assignment

Atomic Structure presentation

This power point is supposedly better if you hear me yacking while you're looking at it. Hope you were there to hear the lecture. It helps to watch this before you do the Atom Drawing worksheet.

Due:

Assignment

Chemistry CST Reference Sheet

This important handout has two sides: the periodic table on one side, and a bunch of equations on the other. This is the sheet you get to use when you take the California Standards Test in chemistry in May. Therefore, Mr. Barnes lets you use it on all of his tests, too. You don't have to memorize anything on here, but you do have to know how to use it.

Due:

Assignment

You need to get the required materials sheet signed by one of your parents by Monday 9/17/2007.

The two handouts were duplicated back-to-back as a single sheet this year.
Make sure your folks read both of them before they sign the materials sheet.

Due:

Assignment

Keep an eye on this list. It lets you know when something is due. Look at it every night. You're expected to have this stuff done when you walk into class on the due dates listed.

See the "How to do Bookwork" handout for instructions on doing bookwork.

I'm sorry that the semester 2 stuff doesn't have due dates yet.
I'll get around to that in time for S2 to happen, no doubt.

Due:

Assignment

The standards are the things you have to learn by the time you're done taking this class.
2/3 of your grade in this class is based on your multiple choice test scores, and those tests are based on these standards.

These are your orders. The come from the state government. FOLLOW THEM. They are the backbone of Mr. Barnes' instructional program and grading system.

Due:

Assignment

Brainpop: Scientific Method

I don't know if you can log on to Brainpop with the district username and password from a computer outside of HHS, but you might want to try.

The username is "hhscougars" and the password is "pride".

If you use the lower link, you'll still need to log in to the brainpop website to see the scientific method cartoon.

Due:

Assignment

Too bad you can't hear me give the lecture that goes with this Power Point presentation. I guess that's the price you pay for being absent. You better get the notes from someone who was there that day.

Due:

Assignment

Please fill out the WHOLE THING.
(Most people don't have zero period or seventh period, so you'll probably leave those lines blank, though.)

Please fill out a new one for me every time your schedule changes.
