Physics Final Review Questions

We're taking the Physics Final on Monday 11/19/2007. It covers chapters 1 through 8. If you want to study for it at home using Quiz Show Lite, here are some files you can use. The "Quick Questions" versions have no full-strength math problems in them. The "Mixed Math" file is nothing but full-workout math questions. The physics final "BASE" version has both math and non-math questions. If you practice with these tst files in Quiz Show, save your scratch paper and turn it in with your packet on Monday for extra credit.

Roller Coaster Lab due

The lab actually happened on 11/6/07. Hope you were there.

Due:

Assignment

Mixed Math Worksheet

You really have to know how to pick your formulas on this worksheet. EVERY kind of physics math problem we've done in this course is on here. Remember, picking the right answer isn't good enough. You have to SHOW YOUR WORK on separate sheets of notebook paper.

Due:

Assignment

Variables Chart: Fill-in Version

If you can't remember what "m/s" means or what variable represents momentum, you really need to fill this chart out. The front side has some boxes filled in for you, but the back side is all blank. If you need to cheat, you can peek at the variables chart on the back of your "The Problem Solving Process" handout - but don't cheat too much, or you're missing the point. When you take a test in here, you get to use the Physics Reference Sheet. The Reference Sheet is full of formulas, so you don't have to memorize the formulas, but the sheet doesn't tell you what all the letters in the formulas stand for, so you have to memorize them. Filling in this sheet should help you memorize them, I hope.

Due:

Assignment

PE/KE lecture

I didn't use the power point file downloadable here on 11/1 when I originally gave the lecture. I just made this power point after school on 11/7/07. Maybe I'll show it tomorrow on 11/8/07. It's still a work in progress. I need to add a bit on a diver diving from a very high diving board, a bullet being shot straight up into the air, a man on a swing set, and a comet orbiting the sun along a very elliptical path.

Due:

Assignment

Momentum & Energy Math Worksheet

Only Mr. Barnes would be so cruel as to make you do math on Halloween. Get over it! It's all about THE HORROR!

Due:

Assignment

Newton's 3rd Law power point presentation

This ppt is very much under construction. I want to add more stuff to it, like a fish swimming, propellor planes, jet planes, rockets, and some other stuff.

Balloon Car Lab

The point of this lab is to demonstrate Newton's third law of motion. By squirting air backward, the car is able to move forward.

Due:

Assignment

National Geographic: For All Mankind video

This video shows lots of good narrated clips from the Apollo program. It shows how objects move in "zero g". It shows how men on the moon can jump and run but it isn't quite the same. It shows what happens when you drop a feather and a hammer at the same time in an airless environment. It's a great showcase for Newton's laws of motion at work.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 3 Review Questions due

Once again, sorry the pdf files are so big.

Due:

Assignment

Acceleration Problems Worksheet given out

The answers are on the back. You might notice that they are all answer "a". The point of this worksheet is, obviously, not to figure out what the answers are, but, rather, to practice the proper procedure for getting to the answer.

Due:

Assignment

Metric & IE Lab due

This lab was executed on Tuesday, 10/2/07, even though the two-sheet worksheet was handed out on Monday 9/24. It involved using triple beam balances, thermometers, graduated cylinders, and rulers. Unless you've got those things at home, you'll have a hard time doing it. Should've been there. Yep.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 1 & 2 Packet due

*Chapter 1 bookwork
*Chapter 2 bookwork (including appendix A notes)
*Brainpop: Scientific Method notes (9/5)
*Scientific Method Presentation notes (9/5)
*Hypothesis vs. Theory worksheet (9/11)
*Newton's 1st Law Presentation notes (9/18)
*Metric Ruler worksheet (9/20)
*Triple Beam Balance/Graduated Cylinder Presentation notes (9/24)
*Speed Calculation Presentation notes (9/25)
*Average Speed Problems In-Class Worksheet (9/25)
*Average Speed Problems Homework Sheet (9/27)

Due:

Assignment

Average Speed Problems Homework Sheet

The answers are on the back of this so you can check your work at home. Don't forget to show all your steps the same way Mr. Barnes shows you on the board in class. As with the in-class sheet, I've posted pdf scans of my own hand-written work-outs.

Due:

Assignment

Average Speed Problems In-Class Worksheet

Make sure you show all your work on a separate sheet of notebook "scratch" paper. You'll have to do the same when you take tests in here. I've posted three pdf files here of my own work-outs I did with my own pen. The pdf's are sort of big, so I apologize, especially to those of you with dial-up, but if you download them and look at them, you can see what A+ scratch paper looks like. I also apologize that I wrote on both sides of the paper and you can see the other side's writing leaking through. I won't do that again. I promise.

Due:

Assignment

Physics Reference Sheet

You get to use this on all of Mr. Barnes' tests. Therefore, you don't have to memorize anything on it, but you have to understand the parts of it that we learn about.

Due:

Assignment

Problem Solving Process handout

Whenever you do math problems in Mr. Barnes' class, you need to follow the steps on this handout on your "scratch paper". Scratch paper is not just a bunch of scribbles you throw away when the test is over. In Mr. Barnes' class, scratch paper is a test within a test. Take it very seriously. When Mr. Barnes shows you on the board how to show your work, take good notes. When you take a test, show your work on your scratch paper the way Mr. Barnes showed you on the board.

The back side of this handout has a chart that explains all the variables that appear on the physics reference sheet. It needs to be committed to memory.

Due:

Assignment

Ball in a Box Lab due

This lab uses such simple materials that you can probably do it at home.

Make sure you've answered every question, including the stuff on the back side of the worksheet.

Due:

Assignment

Hewitt Chapter 2 Chapter Review Answers

Once again, I'm sorry about how big these files are. When you do open them up in Adobe Reader, don't forget to take advantage of the little magnifying glass. The answers are in pretty small print. You really need to zoom in to see them.

Due:

Assignment

Metric Ruler Worksheet

You'd be surprised how many misconceptions people have about rulers and how you're supposed to use them. As with all worksheets, this one does you much more good if you do it with Barnes yacking at you at the whiteboard, but I suppose you could do it on your own at home.

Due:

Assignment

Newton's 1st Law Presentation

You can download and view this presentation, but it's much better if the teacher is there to narrate it in person. There's some stuff toward the end of this one that is sort of half-baked, so you may need to ignore the last few slides in this presentation.

As with all presentations, you need to take notes.

Due:

Assignment

You need to get the required materials sheet signed by one of your parents by Monday 9/17/2007.

The two handouts were duplicated back-to-back as a single sheet this year.
Make sure your folks read both of them before they sign the materials sheet.

Due:

Assignment

The attached downloadable file is a list of everything you need to learn in academic science this year. In Academic Science B/UC, you won't be learning the biology or chemistry standards, so you can ignore them. You will be learning them when you take Aca Sci A with another teacher, however.

These standards are your orders from the state government. They are the backbone of Mr. Barnes' instruction and grading system. LEARN THEM.

Please also note that they are known as the "Integrated Science 2" standards. When you take the CST in May, you need to bubble in "Integrated Science 2" for the course that you are taking.

Due:

Assignment

Hewitt Chapter One Chapter Review Answers

You need Adobe Reader (formerly known as "Adobe Acrobat Reader) to open pdf files. The pdf files downloadable here are a little big. I'm sorry about that. All I had time to do was scan the appropriate pages out of the teacher's edition of the textbook. The answers are in the margins, in the yellowish area. The questions are in the white area.

Due:

Assignment

We didn't quite finish going over this in class because we ran out of time. No biggie. We discussed enough examples to get the picture.

Due:

Assignment

Look at this every night so you know what bookwork you have due at your next meeting.
You are expected to have the textbook sections listed done at the beginning of the period on the date upon which it is due. See the "How To Do Bookwork" handout for instructions.

Due:

Assignment

Brainpop: Scientific Method

I don't know if you can log on to Brainpop with the district username and password from a computer outside of HHS, but you might want to try.

The username is "hhscougars" and the password is "pride".

If you use the lower link, you'll still need to log in to the brainpop website to see the scientific method cartoon.

Due:

Assignment

Too bad you can't hear me give the lecture that goes with this Power Point presentation. I guess that's the price you pay for being absent. You better get the notes from someone who was there that day.

Due:

Assignment

Please fill out the WHOLE THING.
(Most people don't have zero period or seventh period, so you'll probably leave those lines blank, though.)

Please fill out a new one for me every time your schedule changes.
