School of Engineering and Manufacturing

Information
Mission Statement

The Hawthorne High School of Manufacturing and Engineering is a progressive learning community committed to providing a welcoming home to underrepresented groups and to provide a strong foundation in mathematics and science. Through the use of hands on projects, the School of Manufacturing and Engineering is committed to developing innovators who design and implement practical solutions to meet the ever-changing societal challenges of today and tomorrow.

Formed in 2004, the School of Engineering is a small learning community on the campus of Hawthorne High School. Formerly known as the Hawthorne Engineering Academy, we are a California Partnership Academy through the California Department of Education.

We have grown from our initial group of 30 students and 4 faculty members to a program that currently has 370 students and 18 faculty members. We have students from all walks of life, multiple ethnic and religious backgrounds, and varied levels of educational proficiency.

We are more than a social organization. We have a rigorous educational program built on the Project Lead the Way curriculum, a nationally recognized leader in Engineering curriculum at the high school level. We were recognized as one of 15 model schools of all the Project Lead the Way schools in the 2008 school year, and continue to operate at the same high level that garnered this award. Recently, this has lead to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation to name us as one of only six PRIME schools in America.

We also are the home of the award winning Hawthorne Robotics team - Team 207 - the MetalCrafters. Winner of the Los Angeles F.I.R.S.T robotics competition 2009, winner of their division in the International Competition 2012, which led to a place in the overall finals in that competition, and a Runner-up finish.
