School-Wide Attendance Expectations:

The law requires students to attend school regularly and punctually. Students are expected to be in class by 8:25 a.m. which will allow instruction to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The parent/guardian must verify all absences by sending a note upon return. Absences need to be cleared within 3 days. After 3 days, the school cannot make changes to the attendance. Parents/Guardians will be notified of absences daily via an automated system. Remember, when students are absent, instructional time is lost and their education is impacted.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

Absences for proper causes are listed in the State Education Code: illness; medical, dental or eye  appointments; attendance of a funeral of an immediate family member; religious holidays or ceremony; or a prior written request and principal approval. A student whose absence is excused must be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided.

ALL OTHER ABSENCES ARE UNEXCUSED!

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM (EC 60901)

A student is considered a chronic absentee if the student is absent on 10% or more of the school days in the school year. This includes excused AND unexcused absences.

TRUANCY (EC 48260)

A student is classified and reported as truant if the student is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than a 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof. Students who are truant will be placed on the No-Go List, suffer a loss of privileges, and be subjected to SART (School Attendance Review Team) contracts and Saturday School. In addition, they may be cited by school police for habitual truancy.

NO-GO-LIST

Students will be placed on the No-Go List for the following reasons:

Attendance

Students with 30 or more unexcused period absences / 15 or more tardies per semester will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities, field trips, and athletic games.

Behavior

Students who have been suspended prior to any extracurricular activities, field trips, and athletic games will not be allowed to participate.

Students must make progress to correct the tardies, absences, grades, and behaviors in order to be removed from the No-Go List.

TARDY POLICY FOR PERIODS 1-8

Teacher-determined consequences for classroom tardies will be issued by each individual teacher. Excessive tardies will result in parent conferences, SART contracts, and/or SARB (Students Attendance Review Board). Unexcused tardies after nutrition and lunch will result in campus beautification.
